A B2B SEO strategy is a plan to get your company found by the people inside other companies who research, compare and approve a purchase. It starts with who those buyers are, picks keywords by buyer fit, builds a page for each stage of their decision, and measures leads and pipeline instead of traffic.
Key points
- A B2B SEO strategy starts with the buyers, not with a keyword list.
- Keywords are chosen by who searches for them, then by how many search.
- Each stage of the buying decision needs its own page.
- Google asks for no special files or markup for its AI search features.
- Results are measured in leads and pipeline from organic search.
Start with who buys
A B2B purchase involves more than one person, and each one searches differently. The person who will use the product looks for how it works. Their manager looks for comparisons. The person who signs it off looks for cost and risk.
Gartner reports that 75% of B2B buyers prefer a rep free sales experience. Much of the decision happens on your site and in search before anyone contacts you.
So the first step is a list: every role involved in buying what you sell, and the questions each one types into search.
Pick keywords by buyer fit
The right B2B keyword is the one your buyer searches, even if few people search it. A narrow phrase that names a problem, a role or a product category will usually bring fewer visits and better ones.
We’d sort keywords into three groups:
- Problem keywords, for people still working out what’s wrong
- Comparison keywords, for people choosing between options
- Product keywords, for people ready to look at you
One page targets one group. Mixing them makes a page that answers nobody well.
Build a page for each buying stage
Each keyword group needs a matching page type. Explainers answer problem searches. Comparison and alternatives pages answer the choosing stage. Product, pricing and proof pages answer the final stage.
Link these pages to each other with clear link text. Google’s SEO starter guide notes that descriptive anchor text helps people and search engines understand the linked page.
This post is the centre of that kind of group. Related posts cover B2B SEO vs B2C SEO, B2B ecommerce SEO and B2B SaaS SEO content strategy.
Get the technical basics right
Content can’t rank if search engines can’t reach it. Every important page must be crawlable, indexable, fast, and easy to use on a phone.
Check one thing first: that your pages aren’t blocked from indexing. A single noindex setting left on after a site launch hides the whole site from search.
Write from what you know
Google’s guidance on helpful content says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T, which stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. It also asks sites to make clear who wrote the content and how it was produced.
For a B2B company this is an advantage. You know your product, your customers and your market better than a general publisher does. Put a real author on each post and write from that knowledge.
Plan for AI search without extra tricks
You don’t need a separate plan for AI search. Google’s guide to its generative AI features states that no new machine readable files, AI text files or special markup are needed to appear in them.
The same guide favours content with a unique point of view over commodity content. That’s the same work as the section above: clear answers, written from real knowledge, near the top of the page.
Measure leads, not traffic
Traffic is an early signal. The result is leads. We’d track demo requests, calls booked and form fills that come from organic search, then follow them into pipeline and revenue.
Give it time. Google says some changes take effect in hours and others take several months. Review the plan each quarter instead of each week.
This is the work we do in our SEO and AEO services for B2B SaaS.
B2B SEO strategy FAQ
Is B2B SEO slower than B2C SEO?
The ranking work takes a similar time. The sale takes longer, because several people are involved in a B2B decision. So revenue from B2B SEO usually shows later than revenue from B2C SEO.
How long does B2B SEO take to show ROI?
There’s no fixed number. Google says some changes show in hours and others take several months. Add the length of your own sales cycle on top of that.
Does B2B SEO work for small teams?
Yes, if the plan is narrow. A small team should pick one buyer, one group of keywords and a few pages, and do those well before adding more.
